ICPPP224B - Jez Smith

Assessment overview:
Produce an eight page promotional booklet for your  favourite artist or photographer utilising a range of tools in Indesign.
This is my Booklet, on Jez Smith ....

Rationale
The project given was to create an eight page promotional booklet for a favourite artist or photographer utilising a range of tools in InDesign.

Questions that I would need to ask my client before commencing the design would be, the colour scheme and if they had particular colours they wanted to use, images that had been supplied which were of high importance over others, if they were going to supply me with their own information to be put in the booklet or they wanted me to source that for them.

To avoid wasting your time and the clients you could sketch out ideas in front of the client to see if what they are describing they would like and what you understand they want are both the same, this way you do not create something that is completely different to what theywant. Other ways to avoid wasting time could be to get the client to show you examples of things they like or would like to include in the design.

Research to be carried out before designing could include what others in the same profession have done, high rated booklet designs on the internet, look at graphic design books from the library or book store for inspiration. Research the artist and look at any books, websites, biographies or any other material I could collect to get a feel for the artists’ personality and find out unique styles or patterns.

Suggestions to improve the brief could include that all images are provided in high resolution format, this way the images are of best quality, along with information about the artist be provided so that information gathered is not false or incorrect. To improve the final design, suggestions to add extra things at printing such as paper quality and foil or UV colours for a more sophisticated look.

Limitations during this process may include printing, photo quality, showcasing the photographers style through the design or gaining enough or correct information if asked to source information myself.

Options when setting up a document in InDesign include, how many pages you want in your document, page size, columns, margins, bleed, slug, facing pages and portrait/landscape.

When saving the final print ready version to send to printer depending on any requirements the printer has suggested the main one is that files are exported as high resolution PDFs. Problems could arise if you have not outlined fonts, not packaged up the InDesign file before sending & fonts could be changed to default on printers machine or images and text could be lost, colours could not be the same if you did not look at a swatch and went by the colour of the screen and proofing and fixing errors need to be checked.
